Sam Altman’s Legal Turing Test
In a feature by Puck News, Co-Managing Partner Aaron Davis shared his legal perspective on the growing questions surrounding AI liability in the wake of the tragic chatbot-related suicide of 16-year-old Adam Raine. Aaron pointed to the central issues at stake, including whether ChatGPT can legally be considered a product and whether a “reasonable person” could be expected to rely on AI for critical life decisions.
“Would a reasonable person be expected to rely upon that information in making important life decisions? And does OpenAI understand that people are doing that, and disregard that function that they are enabling?” Davis said. He explained that while the concept of reliance in this context remains subjective and legally unsettled, as adoption of AI increases, “I think that the liability will continue to accrue.”
